{"id":2492,"date":"2021-04-01T06:25:28","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T09:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/?p=2492"},"modified":"2021-04-01T11:32:22","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T14:32:22","slug":"sdg-05-gender-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/pt\/sdg-05-gender-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"SDG 05 &#8211; Gender Equality: Why does  it matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there has been progress in the last decades on the front of SDG 05, gender equality, and women\u2019s rights, significant challenges remain and have even been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. Below are some facts reflecting the size of problem we face worldwide according to UN Women:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Globally the pay gap between women and their male counterparts is&nbsp;<strong>23%,&nbsp;<\/strong>with current pace of progress we are still<strong>&nbsp;275 years<\/strong>&nbsp;away to close the gender gap<strong>&nbsp;(that\u2019s 10 generations!)<\/strong><\/li><li>More than&nbsp;<strong>330 million<\/strong>&nbsp;girls and women live on less than 1.9 $\/day, that\u2019s 4.4 million more than men<\/li><li><strong>In 18 countries<\/strong>, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working;&nbsp;<strong>in 39 countries<\/strong>, daughters and sons do not have equal inheritance rights; and&nbsp;<strong>49 countries<\/strong>&nbsp;lack laws protecting women from domestic violence<\/li><li>Women do&nbsp;<strong>6 times<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>the unpaid care<\/strong>&nbsp;and domestic work that men do<\/li><li>Women represent&nbsp;<strong>8% of researchers<\/strong>&nbsp;worldwide<\/li><li><strong>1 in of 3<\/strong>&nbsp;women experience&nbsp;<strong>violence<\/strong>&nbsp;during their lifetime<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-D\/Statistics\/Documents\/facts\/ICTFactsFigures2017.pdf\"><strong>The proportion of women using the Internet is 12% lower<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;than the proportion of men using the Internet worldwide, in Africa the gap is 25%, which means lower chances of employment for women.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"sdg 05\" class=\"wp-image-2493\" width=\"361\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05.png 1536w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-12x12.png 12w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/sustainability-canvas.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/E_SDG-goals_icons-individual-rgb-05-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><figcaption>SDG 05 icon<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And the list unfortunately goes on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Educating women is not only a fair thing to do but according to top consulting firms, the UN Global Compact and World Economic Forum it is good for the economy, communities and business. A recent study shows that investing&nbsp;<strong>$1 in girls\u2019 education<\/strong>&nbsp;in developing countries would yield&nbsp;<strong>$2.8 for the economy<\/strong>, in addition entering the workforce women can escape domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though it is proven that women can play key role in peace building, sustainable development and economic prosperity, their representation in workforce and management roles is still staggeringly low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Only<strong>&nbsp;5.5%<\/strong>&nbsp;of most influential companies are led by women<\/li><li>Less than&nbsp;<strong>1 percent<\/strong>&nbsp;of spending by large businesses on suppliers is earned by women-owned businesses<\/li><li>Female representation in&nbsp;<strong>company boards<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong>5%<\/strong>&nbsp;in OECD countries<\/li><li>Women occupy&nbsp;<strong>38.1% of all manager positions<\/strong>&nbsp;in OECD countries<strong>&nbsp;(<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/gender\/data\/employment\/\"><strong>2018 OECD average data<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, it is estimated that equal representation in the workforce would add<strong>&nbsp;$28 trillion GDP<\/strong>&nbsp;to the global economy by 2025.
